RCMP Drum Major’s Course – The RCMP Drum Major’s Course is an RCMP Human Resources Management Information System (HRMIS) approved course designed primarily for Drum Majors appointed or selected for training within the national program of community pipes and drums for the Force. It was designed with the assistance of the Canadian Armed Forces Ceremonial Guard with the pilot course successfully completed in May 2013. The first course lead instructor was Ceremonial Guard Capt. David Rennie (Ret’d), CD. Prior to commissioning to Adjutant of this Unit, his experience as a Drum Major came from almost 40 years combined service between the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards in the British Army, and with the Governor General’s Foot Guards and Ceremonial Guard of the Canadian Armed Forces. From this initial course, the curriculum evolved through several more successful courses to a 4th held in June 2019 at the RCMP Training Academy, Depot Division, in Regina, Saskatchewan. The course is 6 days in length and is based on the British and Canadian Army’s Regimental Drum Major foot and mace drill. It is an intensive course that has previously taught Canadian Armed Forces Drum Majors, as well as other police, fire, and civilian band Drum Majors from across the country. More information is available from our own Drum Major, Brad Hampson, who is a senior instructor on the course (see contacts page)
NOTE – From June 2020, courses were cancelled due to the Covid 19 restrictions and limitations at the RCMP Training Academy. The date for the next course has not yet been determined, but it is expected to occur in June 2026. When a date has been confirmed, it will be announced here and on the band’s social media accounts.
When a date has been chosen, we expect the available slots on the course will fill fast. RCMP Pipe Bands have priority, but all others will be welcomed on a first come, first severed basis. Any questions should be addressed to the Drum Major at dm@rcmppipesanddrums.com
